Singer-songwriter Isma Sane from Sungai Besar, Selangor, wrote "Derita," recorded it on his phone, and uploaded it to YouTube in 2018 with no plans for a music career. Within months it had millions of views, and listeners were begging for an official release. Since then, Isma has built a catalogue of heartfelt Malay pop, from "Derita" to the TikTok favourite "Karina," and he continues to write the songs people turn to when their hearts need a voice.
